Indications and Usage

Betaine Anhydrous for Oral Solution is indicated for the treatment of homocystinuria to decrease elevated homocysteine blood concentrations in pediatric and adult patients. Included within the category of homocystinuria are:
  • Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency
  • 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency
  • Cobalamin cofactor metabolism (cbl) defect


Betaine Anhydrous for Oral Solution may worsen elevated plasma methionine concentrations and cerebral edema has been reported. Plasma methionine concentrations in patients with CBS deficiency should be monitored by a medical professional. The most common adverse reactions in a physician survey include nausea, gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea.

Elliotts B Solution is indicated as a diluent for the intrathecal administration of methotrexate sodium and cytarabine for the prevention or treatment of meningeal leukemia or lymphocytic lymphoma.


Intrathecal administration of drugs such as methotrexate sodium and cytarabine should be performed by personnel skilled in the technique of lumbar puncture under the supervision of a physician who is experienced in the use of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. The labeling for methotrexate sodium and cytarabine should be consulted.
